What I found out when I began studying belly dance was there are so many benefits to this art form that I did not expect or even consider possible. I started taking belly dance classes in 2008 when some friends invited me to try it. Once I began practicing the movements (most felt very strange in the beginning), I quickly started to notice my muscles getting stronger, areas of my back, neck and shoulders that had been chronically painful weren't so sore, I wasn't waking up with tension headaches on a regular basis, my posture was improving. The classes I was taking also exposed me to a whole new library of interesting music I had never known existed. Soon I found myself feeling more confident, trying new props out, and even performing which in the beginning I had been very reluctant to do. I have now performed in many festivals, parties and shows, but the biggest benefits for my health have always been cultivated in my dance practice. Class time is where I can relax into feeling the music, trying new moves, enjoying the glow of my muscles engaging and increasing my range of motion. It is my honor to teach classes after all these years of study. I will always be a student; seeking out new ideas, new techniques, new music, forever reaching for higher levels of proficiency in this art form. It is a joy to introduce this dance to others and watch them grow as artists and movers.

What do I wear to class?

Comfortable, form-fitting clothes are recommended so the instructor can see your movements. Many students wear yoga pants or leggings and a fitted top. Some prefer a hip scarf with coins or fringe to accentuate hip movements. Bare feet, dance slippers, or socks are typically worn.

 

Do I need previous dance experience?
